چکیده

Light beams carrying orbital angular momentum are key resources in modern photonics. In many applications, the ability to measure the complex spectrum of structured light beams in terms of these fundamental modes is crucial. Here we propose and experimentally validate a simple method that achieves this goal by digital analysis of the interference pattern formed by the light beam and a reference field. Our approach allows one to also characterize the beam radial distribution, hence retrieving the entire information contained in the optical field. Setup simplicity and reduced number of measurements could make this approach practical and convenient for the characterization of structured light fields. © 2017 Optical Society of America

Measuring orbital angular momentum superpositions of light by mode transformation.

We recently reported on a method for measuring orbital angular momentum (OAM) states of light based on the transformation of helically phased beams to tilted plane waves [Phys. Rev. Lett.105, 153601 (2010)]. Here we consider the performance of such a system for superpositions of OAM states by measuring the modal content of noninteger OAM states and beams produced by a Heaviside phase plate.

Measurement of the orbital angular momentum spectrum of partially coherent beams.

In this work we implement a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with an image rotator in one of its arms to measure the orbital angular momentum (OAM) spectrum of a partially coherent beam. By measuring the visibility of the interference as a function of the angle of rotation, the OAM distribution can be recovered via a Fourier transform. Theoretical calculations based on the coherent mode decompositio...

Quasi-intrinsic angular momentum and the measurement of its spectrum.

We introduce the concept of quasi-intrinsic angular momentum to denote fields for which the mean value of the angular momentum is unaltered by a lateral shift of the rotation axis but the spectrum changes. This property is exemplified by the orbital angular momentum of a beam of light about its propagation direction. We propose an interferometric experiment to measure efficiently the exact angu...

Quantitative measurement of the orbital angular momentum density of light.

In this work we derive expressions for the orbital angular momentum (OAM) density of light, for both symmetric and nonsymmetric optical fields, that allow a direct comparison between theory and experiment. We present a simple method for measuring the OAM density in optical fields and test the approach on superimposed nondiffracting higher-order Bessel beams. The measurement technique makes use ...

Controlled generation of higher-order Poincaré sphere beams from a laser

The angular momentum of light can be described by positions on a higher-order Poincaré sphere, where superpositions of spin and orbital angular momentum states give rise to laser beams that have many applications, from microscopy to materials processing. Many techniques exist to create such beams but none so far allow their creation at the source. Here we report on a new class of laser that is ...
